It's been a few weeks since I posted, and we've made tremendous progress in our units of study. 12th grade is finishing out the year with "Our Town" and drawing parallels between the story and their hometown. 9th grade is finishing their poetry unit this week and will take a test on Monday. We've studied different authors such as Langston Hughes, Emily Dickenson, and Edgar Allan Poe. 10th grade is working on the art of narrative writing. They're focusing on verb usage, characterization, point of view and outlines.
UPDATE: The classes are doing the following assignments right now:
9th-We started our poetry unit this week, and so far, we've read three poems. 10th-We're almost 3/4 of the way finished with the unit. Thus far, we've read 17 poems. 12th-Sonnets have been our main focus. We'll be doing some comparative analysis through writing during the coming week. In addition to reading great works of poetry, masters students from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville will be coming during May to help our students with their creative writing in poetry. Hopefully, after having studied great works, the students will have a solid foundation for their own writing. |
