I can hardly believe another new school year has begun! I'm so excited that everything is off to a great start. Every week, we're working on Daily Grammar Practice, vocabulary, and an informational article in addition to reading and writing. Students are also required to read one Accelerated Reader book per nine week period by themselves. Thank you for helping your student succeed!!
I can hardly believe we're half way through this 9 weeks! Progress reports will go out next week. In class, we're working on a variety of topics. 9th grade is involved in a study of To Kill a Mockingbird. If you check E-School, you can see how your child is progressing with their quizzes. 10th grade regular classes are working on Daily Grammar Practice (DGP) as well as their narrative writing skills. The state will be assessing all 9th and 10th grade students in April with the ACT Aspire test, and I want to make sure my kids are ready! 12th grade has been working on a unit about Shakespeare. We've do some background research and have read one play, "Macbeth", and are currently working on "Romeo and Juliet".

It's beginning to look a lot like....the end of the semester!! As we approach the end of this term, please remember that AR books are due by the 14th. Also, everyone will be required to take a semester test.
In class, my 9th and 10th graders have been working on reading, grammar, and vocabulary skills in anticipation of the ACT Aspire test we'll take in the spring. Seniors are completing this semester by reading Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".

In 9th grade, we're reading "Romeo and Juliet. 10th grade is finishing "Antigone", and seniors are looking at the Renaissance and Reformation and sonnets.

Tuesday afternoon/evening we'll be having our annual open house from 3:30-6. Please stop by and say hello!
Last week, our class spent several days completing the district MAP test to assess where student's skills are at the beginning of the year. In 10th grade, we also finished reading short stories. This means that we'll review today and tomorrow and then take a test on Wednesday over all we've read. As for 9th grade, we still have a couple of stories to do. I expect a review toward the end of the week with a test possible on Friday or Monday of next week.
12th grade has just begun working on an assignment for Canterbury Tales which involves understanding what a pilgrimage is and why certain people make pilgrimages. This assignment will be completed on Google Sheets and we'll use new technology called Chromecasting to give our presentations in a few days.
As parents, it's sometimes hard to know exactly what our child is doing in class. This website will hopefully help with this problem. Currently, we're working on a short stories unit in the 10th and 9th grade. Below is a list of stories we've covered so far. In addition to the stories, we're working on vocabulary, too. Please ask your child to see the list they're compiling.
In the 12th grade, we've just completed a brief history of the English language and are now embarking on the reading of three selections from the Exeter Book. After that, we'll begin Beowulf.

This week, all classes have been working on literary devices and where students have found them in their own reading. On Friday, we'll watch a couple of videos illustrating how many of these devices are used in pop culture. Also on Friday, we'll begin reviewing for a test over the terms.

I hope this summer has been restful and your child is ready to come back to school! This year will hold many new adventures in our English classroom, and my goal is to help your child along the way. My grades are kept up to date, and if you ever are concerned or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
This is my sixteenth year to teach, and one thing I’ve learned is that sometimes high school students do not make their parents aware of what is going on the in classroom. This year, I’m implementing a new piece of technology to help with that. The program is called Remind, and it allows me to send e-mail or text alerts to you warning of approaching quizzes, tests or assignments. Please see the syllabus to have access to this amazing technology. Also, we’ll be using Google classroom to help with the management of assignments. Ask your child to see their Google classroom account. I think you’ll be pleased with this technology.

Today, we welcome Writers in the Schools from The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. They'll be working with students the next few days to construct poetry based on our previous studies.
Happy Friday! It is springtime, and some students have spring fever. Let's try to end the school year with some good grades by really focusing on the following units:

It's been a few weeks since I posted, and we've made tremendous progress in our units of study. 12th grade is finishing out the year with "Our Town" and drawing parallels between the story and their hometown. 9th grade is finishing their poetry unit this week and will take a test on Monday. We've studied different authors such as Langston Hughes, Emily Dickenson, and Edgar Allan Poe. 10th grade is working on the art of narrative writing. They're focusing on verb usage, characterization, point of view and outlines.
UPDATE: The classes are doing the following assignments right now:
9th-We started our poetry unit this week, and so far, we've read three poems.
10th-We're almost 3/4 of the way finished with the unit. Thus far, we've read 17 poems.
12th-Sonnets have been our main focus. We'll be doing some comparative analysis through writing during the coming week.
In addition to reading great works of poetry, masters students from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville will be coming during May to help our students with their creative writing in poetry. Hopefully, after having studied great works, the students will have a solid foundation for their own writing.
Next Tuesday, students in 9th grade will take the last To Kill a Mockingbird test. This test will cover part two of the book. Please start reviewing now if you've not begun already!
9th grade needs to finish their figurative language assignment and read chapters 15 and 16 read by Tuesday. There will be a quiz!
10th grade will have a 100 pt. test over Antigone on Monday.

There is an opportunity for my students to attend a field trip to Crystal Bridges in April. Flyers are in the classroom and available for students to pick-up. There is also an opportunity for double points on an AR book February 27th.
