We are almost finished with process essays! We will finish them today and begin working on converting them to speeches which we'll present the end of this week.

Another semester has begun, and with it comes the introduction of a new teacher to my classroom. Ms. Courtney McKinley will be in class this semester doing her student internship, and I am thrilled to have her here! You may be wondering what this means for your student. In a nutshell, they'll have Ms. McKinley teaching most of their lessons until the end of April. She will follow the standards set forth by the state, and will create lesson plans, grade students, and communicate with parents the same as I would. I will always be available should you need me, so don't hesitate to contact me during this time!
Parents, if you're wanting another way to stay informed about what your child is doing in class, the Remind system is a great way to do that. Here are the instructions:
Parents, don't be alarmed when you look at your child's grade and they're missing a Minimum Wage Assignment worth 100 points. I'm not finished grading those, yet, and not having a score in that placeholder adversely effects your child's grade. I'll have those scores put in in a few days. Thanks for understanding!
Only a few more weeks until Christmas break, and we are working on our non-fiction unit. Currently, we are watching video clips of hot topics and then discussing what we've seen. Socratic Seminar is a part of our discussion.
The past couple of days, students have been given independent reading time to work on their AR points. Points are due December 17. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
Today is Socratic Seminar for all classes. Students will learn methods of debate which include:
1. Everyone must participate 2. Stay on topic 3. Don't speak over one another 4. It's ok to disagree; it's not ok to be rude These are life skills that, hopefully, my students can use in other areas besides just English. Today, students are working on Level 3 questions. They've written 15 of them, and now we're turning them into debate topics. Students will research their opinions about 3 questions, and tomorrow we'll have Socratic Seminar to debate opinions.
Many of my students are gone to the football state playoffs today. Because of this, we are taking an AR reading day. Points are due at the end of this nine weeks.
Most students presented their non-fiction items today, and did quite well. Others will present tomorrow because we are behind due to the assembly yesterday.
Students have turned in their reports, and I am grading them and returning them. Ask your student to see what they made. We're moving on to non-fiction. Today, we looked at current events and defined non-fiction.
All essays were turned in today. Students were taught how to convert Google Docs to Word Docs, and then they printed their papers.
Hopefully, all of my classes will be finishing their research papers by Wednesday of this week. Ask your child to see what they've been working on in class!
I apologize for not posting for a couple of days. As most of you who attended conferences were aware, I was sick, and I ended up missing two days of school. While I was out, students in all of my classes worked on their essays. Today, I worked with all students on Works Cited, and I will be looking at all essay questions Monday.
It's parent teacher conference day! Hope to see some of you starting at 2:30 today and wraping up around 6:30. In class this Tuesday, we worked toward completing out essays. All essays will be due Friday.
I was out at a workshop today, but all students should have worked on their research papers.
